Dr. Tonya Knowlton Named Lone Finalist for Superintendent Position

NEVADA, Texas - At a special meeting held on Monday, July 19, The Community Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees announced Dr. Tonya Knowlton as the “lone finalist” to serve as the district’s next Superintendent of Schools. The board’s announcement follows an extensive, nationwide search lasting several months. The search process included gathering input from community stakeholders, which was used to develop a candidate profile that was nationally advertised. More than 54 candidates applied for the position. The board initially narrowed the field of candidates to four candidates and then two finalists who participated in several comprehensive interviews and visited the district and the surrounding community.

Community ISD Board President Randy McCuistion believes Dr. Tonya Knowlton is the best fit to serve the district as its next leader.

“Our board is excited to welcome Dr. Knowlton to our community,” said President McCuistion. “We were fortunate that many exceptional candidates wanted to come to our district. After an diligent process, our trustees became convinced that Dr. Knowlton is the most qualified choice to lead our rapidly growing district, and that she will carry us to the next level of success for all our students.”

Dr. Tonya Knowlton is currently serving as the superintendent of Lexington ISD in Central Texas, between Austin and College Station. Before becoming the Superintendent of Lexington ISD in 2017, she was in East Texas, where she spent the majority of her education career. Dr. Knowlton has experience as a teacher, a principal, an adjunct professor, a superintendent, an executive director and other central office positions.

Dr. Knowlton considers herself a student-centered leader. She keeps the students as the focus for all of her decisions, and she strives to create the best environment possible for students and staff. She is excited about the community, the staff and the students and the successes of Community ISD. She has a goal of being transparent and collaborative at CISD, and she is excited about working with everyone to make Brave Nation the best that it can be. She encourages input and involvement by all stakeholders, and strives to be approachable and receptive to everyone in the community. Dr. Knowlton has adopted a philosophy based on the Japanese business term, Kaizen, which means continual growth and improvement, and she strives every day to be better than the day before.

Dr. Knowlton is married to her high school sweetheart, Chris, and they have two beautiful daughters. Chris is a registered nurse in the labor and delivery department at St. David’s in Round Rock. Her oldest daughter, Kaylee, is a graduate of Southern Methodist University and Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, and she is employed by the Bracewell Law Firm in Dallas. She is married to Taylor Henson, and they are expecting their first baby in August 2021. Her youngest daughter, Bree, is a registered nurse in the emergency department of Texas Children’s Hospital in Dallas. She is married to Jesse Raibourn, and they live in Dallas. Dr. Knowlton is so proud of both of her daughters and their husbands for their successes and accomplishments.

Dr. Knowlton and Chris are excited about their move to Community ISD, and they are looking forward to getting to know the people of Lavon, Copeville, Nevada, and Josephine. Dr. Knowlton considers it an honor to serve in this district, and she can’t wait to get to work!

State law requires a 21-day waiting period after a school board names a superintendent “lone finalist” before the future school superintendent can sign a contract.
