January is School Board Appreciation Month
There are often challenges involved in providing an excellent educational experience for students in our district, and even in the best of times serving on a school board requires dedication and a servant's heart. By most peoples' estimation, 2020 was not the best of times.
The past year required an unusual combination of skills and talents from district leaders. With shifting and unexpected circumstances, laws and regulations changed often, and those statewide changes required adaptability, quick problem solving, teamwork, and leadership at the district level.
Navigating through unfamiliar and tricky waters became a daily task, complicated by the differing opinions and desires of various members of the community. These uncertain times created challenges for even the most seasoned among us. A steady hand on the rudder was absolutely required, and that’s exactly why the Texas Association of School Boards' theme of Navigating to Success is so apt for our award-winning school district.
Our board of trustees came through when we needed them most this year, charting a course that protected our most vulnerable, while ensuring that academic rigor would be maintained at all levels. It was a daunting situation, but they navigated to success with unerring determination.
Board service is a volunteer effort, accepted by only a few in the community. It is a tough job with no salary, and it is a critically important role that requires an election and then mandated training. It is a responsibility that takes time, a mature outlook, and careful decision-making.
School board members are the largest group of elected officials in the state, numbering more than 7,000 statewide. They are farmers, doctors, business owners, retirees, and young professionals. They are people you see in the store, at the game, and in your neighborhood. They are often overlooked, but their contributions cannot be overstated. They are shaping tomorrow.
Take a moment to recognize your local trustees. Take a moment to honor the work they are doing to help your students sail into the future. Take a moment to say thank you for the work school board members are doing on behalf of your students and community.
Join me in celebrating #SchoolBoardMonth throughout the month of January. We'll be posting videos of each school board member throughout the month, and daily celebrating a different trustee. We also ask that you share with us your favorite memories of one or more trustees, or a story of how they impacted you or your student.
