Dear Brave Nation,

I want to personally thank our community of families, staff, and citizens for your patience and support during these uncertain times. All of our lives are being impacted by this concerning situation, however, I remain more inspired than ever at the way our commUNITY comes together in the face of adversity. I know we will continue to work together and believe in each other as we excel through this time. I have decided all CISD buildings will remain closed through Friday, April 3, 2020, and we will re-evaluate the circumstances at that time. Let’s remember, school ISN’T closed...we are simply doing school a different way. Providing effective academic instruction is the main purpose of public schools and we will continue that purpose with fidelity. With that said, we will transition to BravesID (Braves Instructional Delivery from a Distance). This is our system to provide instructional support to our Braves while in various locations.

We are extending the suspension of normal district operations in an effort to support our nation’s need to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19. Our local and national health officials report that cases are continuing to spread in the state, and an increase in confirmed cases in Collin County seems likely. Suspending operations for this length of time will allow us to determine, in coordination with local health officials, whether the virus is continuing to have community spread or whether it has been contained. We will use the week of March 30th to make decisions on whether there is a need to extend BravesID. 

Our buildings will be closed, but we are continuing to have school! It’s just going to look different and we are going to depend on our strong school/family partnerships now more than ever. I realize you have a lot of questions and I want to try to answer as many as we can at this time. We have created a Community ISD COVID-19 updates page that includes an FAQ that will be updated regularly. I will also be conducting a Facebook Live session on Thursday, March 19 at 6 PM. If you are able, please join me and share any questions you may have. If you are not able to join, you may send your questions to info@communityisd.org and we will get you connected with the person who can help.

Below is the most pressing information we have for our families at this time:

Distance Learning - Monday, March 23 will mark the 1st day of the 4th nine weeks of school in Community ISD and we will be launching into BravesID. On Thursday, March 19th you will receive an email from our Chief Learning Officer regarding how to access instruction during the duration of our BravesID implementation. 

Access to Google Classroom - All students have been enrolled in Google Classroom. The login is their CISD student email address (first three letters of first name + first three letters of last name + the two-digit birth month + cisdbraves.org) example: Melissa Jones, born in May = meljon05@cisdbraves.org. The password is the student ID#. Parents can also login to the Google Classroom. You will receive an invitation to join each teacher’s classroom. If you do not receive this email by Monday, March 23, please contact your child’s teacher.

Attendance - Students must log in to each teacher’s Google Classroom each day and complete the assigned warm-up activity to be counted present. 

Grades - Grades will continue to be taken for assignments. Parents will be able to check your child’s assignments and grades through our Blackboard mobile app or the Tyler Student 360 access.

Food Distribution - On each calendar school day the CISD Child Nutrition Department will deliver free breakfast beginning at 8 AM and free lunch beginning at 11:30 AM via our regular bus routes. Meals are free for any student under 18 but the student must be present to accept the meal. (Click here to look up the bus stop drop-off meal times) Parents, please help us remind students to maintain a distance from each other at the bus stop and not stand in groups. If you have questions about the bus routes and food delivery, please contact 972-843-6340.

Technical Support - Parents or students can contact techhelp@communityisd.org for technical support or assistance with the online platform. During regular school hours (8 AM - 4 PM) parents or students can call 972-843-6401 for the same support. 

Electronic Devices for Students - Electronic devices with internet access will be needed for student learning during BravesID. CISD is committed to ensuring all students have a device to use during this time. Community ISD secondary students (6th - 12th grade) were issued a Chromebook at the beginning of the year. If your elementary student does not have access to an ipad, tablet, laptop or home computer, the district has a limited number of devices available for check out. 

The CISD Technology Department will have drive-up service in front of the NeSmith and McClendon Elementary cafeterias during the times listed below. If your EMS or CHS student did not receive a Chromebook for any reason; if a CISD Chromebook needs to be repaired; or if your elementary student needs to check out a device, please attend one of the following drive-up events:

  • 5 - 8 PM on Wednesday, March 18 
  • 11 AM - 1 PM on Thursday, March 19 
  • 5 PM - 8 PM on Thursday, March 19 
  • 11 AM - 1 PM on Friday, March 20 
  • 5 - 8 PM on Friday, March 20 

Internet Connection - We know that internet connectivity is an issue for many in our area. If you do not have a reliable internet connection at your home, please take a look at the providers in our area as many are offering discounted or free temporary service. If you have indicated to your child’s teacher that reliable internet connectivity is an issue at your home, the campus will be in contact with you about alternative assignment delivery.

Extra-curricular - All extra-curricular practices, competitions, and events involving Community ISD students are canceled during the implementation of BravesID. All facilities are closed to students (except for our FFA students who need to feed animals), all practices will be canceled and all activities will be canceled/postponed. 

Upcoming Events - We know that there are many important upcoming events, especially for our senior students. We are working to postpone and reschedule events if possible. Closely monitor emails from your campus as well as the district website for updates on the campus/district calendars.

Sanitizing - Our campuses and facilities have been thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Our maintenance and custodial staff remain on duty and are continuing to disinfect all areas being accessed by staff. 

Special Services - ARD and 504 meetings will continue as scheduled beginning on Wednesday, March 18th. Please be aware that these will be handled virtually, not in person. If you need to reschedule, please contact your campus Principal. If your student is receiving special services for 504 or special education, we will be working to meet those needs as we begin our transition to remote learning. If you have specific questions about your child’s needs, please contact your caseworker or email julie.meek@communityisd.org.

Dual Credit Classes - Collin College and/or a representative of CHS will communicate to dual credit students about the plans moving forward.

Pre-K, Kindergarten and New Student Registration - Incoming Pre-K, Kindergarten and new to the district students will begin registration when online student registration opens at a later date.

This week the CISD administration team has been closely monitoring COVID-19 developments and maintaining daily contact with health officials from the CDC, Collin County Health Services and the Texas Department of State Health Services. Due to the rapidly changing events across the state and country regarding COVID-19, CISD is extending spring break through March 20, 2020.  

All CISD students will remain on break Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20. Beginning Monday, March 16, no extracurricular or UIL activities will take place until further notice. All staff and student travel will be suspended until further notice. The district will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and plan to reopen school on Monday, March 23. We will communicate across all channels if updated information becomes available. 

As you can imagine, this was not an easy decision, but one that was made with the health and safety of our students and our entire community in mind. The COVID-19 pandemic is a continually developing situation and is impacting citizens across the globe. We understand this is a concerning situation for some and a frustrating scenario for others. These are unprecedented times and I’d like to personally thank you for your support as we work together to keep our Braves healthy.

Many of you have been following news reports about the spread of the novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19). We want to make sure you are aware that the district is closely monitoring this situation through proven and trustworthy sources including the Collin County Health Department, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These health officials believe the risk to our school community is low at this time.

Community ISD will continue to follow the guidance and expertise of national and local health officials to help protect our students and staff from all communicable diseases. While there are no reports of this illness in our area, families are encouraged to visit the CDC website for more information regarding the Coronavirus.

While a new type of illness can be scary, we can help protect our students, teachers, and the broader community by using simple everyday actions that protect people from other types of respiratory viruses. Our teachers, school nurses, and staff are working carefully to encourage these simple and effective habits of frequent handwashing, covering every cough or sneeze, and cleaning classroom tables/surfaces frequently.  This is important not just to help prevent the spread of coronavirus COVID-19, but to help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illness and absences.

As a school district, we are taking the following steps to ensure we provide a healthy and safe learning environment:

  • Encourage students and staff to stay home when sick
  • Educate students and staff to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their bent arm, and to wash hands after using a tissue
  • Teach handwashing techniques and provide time for students and staff to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer (supplied inside of classrooms and in common areas)
  • Encourage students and staff to keep their hands away from their nose, mouth, and eyes
  • Regular disinfection of commonly touched surfaces including student desks and bus seats
  • All teachers and bus drivers will have access to disinfecting wipes

Parents and guardians can help to keep their child, our schools, and community healthy by:

  • Observing their child for signs of infection which may include coughing, colds, fever, itching on the skin and scalp and unusual rashes
  • Keeping sick students at home and seeking medical attention for severe illness
  • Reinforcing the importance of good hand hygiene
  • Adopting healthy practices, such as disposing of used tissues, coughing into a sleeve rather than into a hand, and not touching one’s eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Keeping children home until free of fever for 24 hours (without the aid of fever reducing medication)
  • Keeping children home until diarrhea free for 24 hours (without the aid of anti-diarrheal medication)
  • Receiving the flu vaccine
