Board Approves Pay Increase

On June 17, the award-winning Community ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a balanced budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year which includes across-the-board 5% raises for all school employees, an increase to the district’s contributions for health insurance, additional stipends for high need areas, as well as additional personnel to address enrollment growth, academic needs, and school safety.

"When I came to Community ISD in 2015, our starting teacher salary was $39,514," said CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens. "We ranked as one of the lowest of all our neighboring districts," he added. The 2019 teacher salary increase of $3,100 marks the third significant pay increase for CISD teachers in the last four years. The salary for a beginning teacher in CISD has risen by 30% since 2015-16, with a first-year teacher in 2019-20 making $51,164.

In a letter sent to staff to announce the pay increase for 2019-20, Dr. Nivens explained that in addition to the funding CISD will receive as a result of HB3 which is earmarked for raises for teachers, counselors, nurses, and librarians, "our Board has once again demonstrated their commitment to go above and beyond to fund a significant pay raise for all CISD staff members by approving a 5% across the board salary increase. The Board recognizes that all of our employees speak life and are an important part of what we do for our children."

The 2019-20 CISD budget also includes an increase in the district’s contribution toward employee health insurance. The board approved over $230,000 toward covering a portion of the increase to TRS health insurance premiums. The district will now cover an additional $78/month toward any TRS-Active Care plan. With this increase, a CISD employee will now pay $0 for Employee only coverage on TRS-ActiveCare 1-HD.

The 2019-20 budget includes funding and additional staff to address priority areas identified by you and our community in the recent financial survey: safety and security, maintaining smaller class sizes, and AP/Dual Credit initiatives. For example, CISD will add another police officer for the district's police department. This will bring the total number of officers to four and will allow CISD to have a dedicated police officer protecting and serving each of our campuses. CISD will also add an additional counselor at Edge Middle School as enrollment at that campus is expected to exceed 600 students. The addition of a second counselor at EMS will enhance our ability to meet our Braves’ academic and social/emotional needs and remove barriers to learning. Our counselors play a key role in helping students develop the skills and behaviors critical for their success. Other items included in the 2019-20 budget include the addition of a stipend for our dual-credit teachers and two additional teachers in secondary Engligh/Language Arts.
