Brave Nation Teacher Spotlight
Meet Edge Middle School Outdoor Education Teacher and EMS Coach Blake Lierman. Earlier this month EMS Principal Dave Girardi presented Coach Lierman to be recognized by the CISD Board of Trustees as a STAR teacher! Coach Lierman is a graduate of Abilene Christian University where he played football and ran track. He has been a teacher for nine years and this is his 3rd year in the #BraveNation. Last summer, campus leadership identified a need to offer additional elective courses at EMS. So, Coach Lierman proposed, organized and implemented a brand new Outdoor Education class based on a curriculum which is typically offered at the high school level. The middle school Outdoor Education class immediately became a very popular elective with over 160 (6th - 8th grade) students currently enrolled. There are plans to extend the program to include Outdoor Education 2 so that students have the opportunity to gain additional skills, knowledge and experiences.
Outdoor Education is a fun and exciting co-ed physical education course. Students are taught life-long skills by using integrated curriculum of science, math, writing, critical thinking skills, and computer technology. The focus is on outdoor activities such as: archery, orienteering, survival skills, first aid/CPR, trip planning, angling, tackle crafts, hiking, backpacking, camping, outdoor cooking, conservation/environmental issues.
Thank you Coach Lierman for your leadership and passion in bringing new opportunities and learning experiences to the EMS Braves!!
