  • May EMS Band Update

Hey Everyone! It is finally May, the end of school, and we have "finished" up another year! We think everyone can agree this has been a crazy last half of school. We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. We do have a few important things we need to inform you of as we wrap up this semester.

    •  Grades/Online assignments: MANY of you have missing assignments or a few you may want to redo. Regardless of when the assignment was due, as long as you turn in missing work, we will give you full credit. If no attempt is made to complete missing work or redo assignments, we cannot help you out. Please contact us if you have any questions about assignments.
    • Auditions for next year's freshmen: This information is posted in Google Classroom. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Boyce roderick.boyce@communityisd.org
    • Auditions for Concert/Symphonic Band: Audition instructions and material for next year's 7th and 8th graders for Concert and Symphonic Band will be posted. We understand not everyone has their instrument, so please don't worry. Students that do not have their instrument will have to complete the audition at the beginning of next school year. We will take into account those that do have their instrument and complete the audition and those that have their instrument but DO NOT complete the audition. Do your best and we will make it work! Auditions must be submitted by the last day of school, May 21st.
    • Popcorn Pick-Up: If you still haven't picked up your popcorn order, we will be at school Thursday, May 14th from 4-7pm for you to get your orders. The product is still good and ready to eat!
    • Instrument Drop-Off: We will be requiring all school owned instruments be turned back in for the summer. We will be at EMS on May 26th from 4-7pm for you to come by and drop it off. Let us know if this doesn't work for you.

  • April EMS Band Update

We hope everyone is doing ok and making the best of this weird and crazy world we live in now. Since we have two more months of "school", we are still going to keep you informed with these monthly updates.

    •  Assignments: There are 2 assignments posted a week-a playing one and a worksheet. Make sure you do the assignments and attach any necessary files. Let us know if something doesn't work or if you need help.
    • READ INSTRUCTIONS: a lot of assignments are not completed or not done correctly simply because directions were not read. We try to be as thorough as possible with what we are expecting you to do and how to do it so PLEASE READ!
    • How-to videos: Just like with instructions, a lot of our assignments have how-to videos in Google Classroom that explain what to do. Please watch them before you email us about how to do something.
    • Google Hangouts: our live stream times are posted in Google Classroom. If you need that "in person" help on something or just want to hang out and talk we are available! Come say hi!
    • Fundraiser Product: If you are not aware, staff is no longer allowed at school. We put the product in a safe place where it will stay good. This product does not go bad, so as soon as we can get back to school we will let you know to come get it!
    • Instrument needs/repairs: Unfortunately, for most instrument supplies you will be responsible since we cannot make contact in person with any of you. We are more than happy to help steer you in the right direction and refer you to a store or website. For instrument repairs of SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS, please contact us BEFORE you try to repair it yourself or take it anywhere.

We miss you ALL so much and can't wait to see you again! Keep practicing and we'll see you soon!

  • Smart Music

We have some great news! For schools impacted by COVID-19 closures, SmartMusic is offering free access through June 30, 2020. SmartMusic is a web-based suite of music education tools that support efficient practice, helping musicians to develop and grow.

We have sent all our students an email with a code to sign up for their FREE account! We will be using this for our playing assignments. SmartMusic has their instrument method book and MUCH more, so this is great if your student does not have their band binder at home with them.

For students that do not have their instrument at home, we will be communicating alternate assignments for them to do.

Please have your students take advantage of this EXCITING opportunity!

Thank you very much for being patient. We have waited until we had ALL the information and procedures in place before sending anything out to avoid having to change things or confuse you.  We know you have a lot of questions about how things are going to proceed the next few weeks. We are doing our best to make sure education continues even though it will look a lot different. We will hopefully answer a lot of your questions with this email.

We will bring your instrument out to you. EVERYONE needs to come to get their instrument. EVERYONE will have required assignments to play in Google Classroom. Grades in band: As stated above, there will be assignments posted in google classroom for what to do. Assignments will be both playing assignments and written assignments. Please contact us if you are having trouble with internet at home or other concerns. • PRACTICE RECORDS

It's a new 9 weeks and we are all rocking and rolling on our instruments now! We are starting our practice records now with the beginning band students.

Simply, students record the minutes they practice in a week. However many minutes they practice is their grade. Students must also have a parent/guardian signature every week to keep them accountable.

Practice records are checked every Monday. For every day it's late, it's 10 points off. They have until Friday the week it's due (5 extra days) to make sure it's signed. We do not take practice records after Friday the week it's due.

I am attaching a copy of the practice record. If you have any questions please email me. Thanks!

  • MS All-Region Auditions

    All Region Band

This past Friday, December 7, 2018 were the MS All-Region Auditions. Stuents from all around the region-including schools like Melissa, Anna, Van Alstyne, Farmersville, Howe, Celina, etc.-prepare audition music for the honor of making the All-Region Symphonic or Concert Bands. This audition is like a giant chair test, and students are ranked based on their scores from top to bottom.

We had 13 students from Edge Middle School respresent our school and audition for the band. Our students competed against 88 Flutes, 89 clarinets, 67 percussion, 64 trumpets, 56 trombones, 53 Saxophones, 61 Euphoniums & Tubas, and 35 French Horns. Fortunately we had 5 of our Edge Braves make the band! Lauren McDaniel, clarinet, and Andrew Carroll, tuba, made the Symphonic Band and Karrington Robinson, clarinet, Lilly Roddy, flute, and Joseph Smith, euphonium, made the Concert Band! This is the second year for Lauren McDaniel and Karrington Robinson to make the All-Region Band!

We are so proud of all our students representing our school so well!
