Ms. Wanda Poindexter
I began teaching at Community ISD in August 2000. I taught sixth grade Reading for twelve years. During seven of those years I also taught ESL and three of those years I taught Dyslexia, as well as, tested students for the district. I have taught Creative Writing, Leadership, and one year of Language Arts. I was RTI coordinator for one semester at the middle school. In 2013 I began a two-year dyslexia training program at Scottish Rite Hospital to become an Academic Language Therapist. I completed that program in 2015 and I am now a licensed and certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT). This is my seventh year teaching dyslexia aa a therapist at Community. I taught ESL and Developmental Reading at Collin College and substitute taught in several districts in North Texas for about four years prior to that. I have been in education for the last twenty-four years and still love helping students be successful.
I have an Associate degree in Office Administration and I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Dallas Baptist University in Business and Education. I also have received a Master degree from Texas Woman’s University in Reading and Education. I received a second Master degree from Texas A&M Commerce in Educational Leadership.
I am a Texas native and have four grown children. My oldest daughter, Wendy, is a teacher and my youngest daughter, Dawn, is a nurse. My oldest son, Ryan, is an electrician and my youngest son, Jay, installs and repairs medical equipment (and is a beekeeper on the side). I have nine grandchildren and enjoy spending time with them and watching them play sports, play music, swim, fish, sing or dance.
My conference period is from 1:15-2:00. I spend my mornings at NeSmith and the afternoon at McClendon. The best way to reach me is by email and I will return the email before I leave for the day. I am looking forward to a great year with your student.
