July 4 - Independence Day

The 4th of July, or Independence Day, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which severed the 13 American colonies' political ties to Great Britain. We hope you'll join us in celebrating America's 250th birthday on July 4, 2026.

July 27 - Convocation

Convocation is Community ISD's annual kick-off event for staff, featuring speeches, skits, music, and other celebrations of the start of another great year together. This date is subject to change each year depending on the start of school, but is usually a week out from the first day of instruction.

July 28 - Schedule Pick Up and Meet the Teacher - Community High School

Due to construction impacts at CHS this year, we unfortunately had to postpone the District-wide Back to School Bash until the Summer of 2027. Instead, each campus will host their own "Bash", with school supply pickups, teacher introductions, and schedules available. This is also a great time to walk the campus, get to know new administrators, and settle in to the 2026-27 school year. Doors will open at CHS at 5 pm and remain open until 7 pm. Please attend this event only if your student(s) are in the 9th through 12th grade for the 2026-27 school year.

July 29 - Edge & CTMS Schedule Pick Up and Meet the Teacher

Doors will open at 5 pm and remain open until 7 pm at both Edge Middle School and Community Trails Middle School. Please attend this event only if your student(s) in the 6th through 8th grade AND are attending this campus for the 2026-27 school year. July 30 - Meet the Teacher - All Elementary Campuses

Doors will open at 5:30 pm and remain open until 7 pm at all elementary campuses - Dodson, Ellis, McClendon, NeSmith, and Roderick. Please attend this event only if your student(s) in Pre-K through 5th grade AND are attending this campus for the 2026-27 school year. Disability Pride Month

Honors the history, achievements, and rights of the disabled community.  It aims to reframe disability as a natural part of human diversity, push back against ableism, and promote equal opportunities and access. This month-long observation was first celebrated in Boston, Massachusetts in 2015 to mark the 25th anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

August 7 - Meet the Braves

This is the unofficial kickoff to the fall season. We'll introduce this year's football, volleyball, cross country, fall golf, team tennis, cheer, Dazzlin' Dames, and band, as well as any new coaches or program sponsors. This date is subject to change depending on the first day of school each year.

August 26 - Women's Equity Day/Women's Independence Day

August 26 is Women's Equity Day in the United States. It marks the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This historic legislation guaranteed that the right to vote could not be denied or abridged on the basis of sex.

August 25-31 - Be Kind to Humankind Week

In Community ISD, we follow the C.O.D.E. - Character, Ownership, Drive, and Excellence. In the week of August 25-31, we encourage everyone to keep the C.O.D.E. by being excellent to each other.

August 24-28 - World Water Week

Water is a limited resource, and in following the C.O.D.E., we must be good stewards of the resources we have been blessed with. This is what "ownership" looks like - acting responsibly, "owning" mistakes, and celebrating successes.

National Wellness Month

First commemorated in 2018, August is now known as National Wellness Month. During the month of August, Community ISD encourages you to focus on self-care - limit screen time, find ways to get outside, exercise, and get a good night's rest.

September 10 - Grandparents Day observed (actual date September 13)

National Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United States on the first Sunday following Labor Day. Since Community ISD is not in school on Sundays, we will celebrate Grandparents Day on Thursday, September 10 with a brunch at all elementary campuses. The day is dedicated to honoring grandparents, giving them an opportunity to show love for their grandchildren, and helping children recognize the guidance older generations can provide.

September 11 - Patriot Day & Texas First Responders Day

Texas First Responders Day is officially observed every September 11, coinciding with Patriot Day, to honor the bravery and sacrifices of the state's police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel. State law mandates that the day be appropriately observed in Texas public schools.

September 15 - National IT Professionals Day

Celebrated on the third Tuesday of September, this day honors critical, often unseen work of tech experts like our amazing network engineers, system admin, cybersecurity professionals, and campus techs who keep our digital infrastructure running smoothly.

September 15 - National Voter Registration Day

National Voter Registration Day is a non-partisan civic holiday dedicated to celebrating our democracy. Since its kickoff in 2012, National Voter Registration Day has seen over 6.5 million Americans get registered to vote in time for their next trip to the ballot box. September 17 - Constitution Day

This annual observance commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution, which occurred at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787.  Signing it did not enact the Constitution. It had to be ratified by conventions in at least nine of the 13 states, which officially occurred when New Hampshire ratified it on June 21, 1788.

September 24 - American Indian Heritage Day observed (actual date September 25)

An official Texas state holiday created by the 83rd Texas Legislature in 2013, American Indian Heritage Day is observed on the last Friday of September each year. It is designed to recognize and celebrate the historic, cultural, and social contributions that American Indian communities and leaders have made to our state and our nation.

September 24 - National Teaching Assistants' Day observed (actual date September 25)

This day is annually observed on the last Friday of September, and dedicated to recognizing the hard work and impact of teaching assistants, learning support assistants, and classroom aides.

September 7-11 - Payroll Appreciation Week

National Payroll Appreciation Week is observed during the first full week of September each year, which falls September 7-11 in 2026. The observance raises national awareness of the efforts of professionals in the payroll industry.

September 13-19 - National Arts in Education Week

Established by the U.S. Congress in 2010, National Arts in Education Week is celebrated annually during the second week of September, and highlights the vital role the arts play in education. Here in Community, we value the amazing contributions of our students and staff that participate in band, choir, theater, visual arts, dance, and other creative forms of expression. Studies show that students who participate in the arts are more likely to graduate high school, have higher test scores, and see measurable improvements in writing scores and critical thinking.

September 13-19 - Celebrate Freedom Week

Celebrate Freedom Week coincides with Constitution Week, established by the U.S. Congress to encourage all Americans to learn about the Constitution. Both Celebrate Freedom Week and Constitution Week focus on September 17, the date in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. 

Each year, during the week that includes September 17, Texas schools honor Celebrate Freedom Week (TEC § 29.907) to highlight the values and ideals on which the United States was founded as well as the sacrifices that were made for freedom in the founding of the country. Students learn about the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.  Students also examine the relationship between the ideas in these documents and subsequent American history.

September 14-18 - Finance & Accounting Appreciation Week

Please join us in recognizing the contributions and achievements of our Finance and Accounting Team! National Finance and Accounting Appreciation Week is celebrated in the third week of September annually to recognize and appreciate the dedicated individuals who keep their organization's financial systems running smoothly.

September 14-18 - Homecoming

Homecoming offers our past, current, and future Community students a chance to come together and celebrate our fantastic school district. Celebrated annually in the month of September, the week offers a chance for students and staff to participate in daily theme days and generate school spirit. This year's theme is "Brave New World," with each day getting a small sub-theme. Monday will also be the annual Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally.

Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 through October 15

Celebrated annually from September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Here in Community ISD we will be commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month with celebrations across our campuses all month long.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September to recognize children and families affected by pediatric cancer. It serves as a global campaign to highlight the realities of pediatric cancer, honor survivors and those who have passed, and raise critical funds for research and improved treatments.

Hydrocephalus Awareness Month

National Hydrocephalus Awareness Month is officially recognized every September in the United States. The month is dedicated to busting myths, challenging assumptions, and supporting the over 1 million Americans currently living with this neurological condition.

Attendance Awareness Month

September is National Attendance Awareness Month. Showing up matters, and consistent attendance is key to academic growth and academic success.

Consistent school attendance plays a critical role in helping students build the academic and social foundations they need to succeed. Missing class time can significantly interfere with a student's ability to master the material required to move forward to the next grade level. Students who are chronically absent — defined as missing 10% or more of the school year — face a much lower likelihood of reading at grade level by third grade, performing well in middle school, and graduating on time.

Beyond falling behind academically, students who miss school also miss out on chances to build social connections and develop important skills like problem-solving and self-regulation — abilities that are essential for continued growth and learning.

When students attend school consistently, they're able to move forward academically, build meaningful social connections, and explore what interests and motivates them. Both students and families should work together to minimize absences whenever possible.

Attendance requirements for students are governed by state law, the Texas Education Code, and policies set by the CISD Board, which include:

A student may be marked absent for missing any portion of the school day, whether that's the entire day, arriving late, or leaving early.

According to Texas law, students must attend at least 90% of the time a class meets. Falling below that threshold — no matter the reason behind the absences — results in loss of course credit. To regain credit and avoid being held back, students must complete a plan developed by the campus principal or attendance committee.

Custodial Worker's Day - October 2

On October 2 each year, Community ISD honors the incredible efforts of our custodial staff, who contract with the District through a third party, AHI. Please take a moment today to show appreciation to your campus custodial staff, giving an extra effort to properly disposing of trash and cleaning up your area.

World Teachers Day - October 5

Established by UNESCO in 1966, this takes place annually on October 5. We will the staff who make school possible each day, and highlight their contributions to the future of our world. This year's theme is "Recasting teaching as a collaborative profession."

National Coaches Day - October 6

National Coaches Day was established in 1972, and celebrates the impact of all coaches on student-athletes and communities. This year we ask that you honor your student(s)' coaches by writing them a thank you note and delivering to the next practice or game.

Go Red for Dyslexia Day - October 8

Observed on October 8 annually, "Go Red for Dyslexia" encourages people to wear red to raise awareness, fight stigma, and celebrate neurodiversity. We're reclaiming red - it's a color that many people with dyslexia associate with their mistakes being highlighted in school, or getting things wrong.

Texas Education Human Resources Day - TBD

Annually proclaimed at some time in October by Governor Greg Abbott, Texas Education Human Resources Day is a day set aside to recognize and honor the important contributions made by school staff who work in human resources. We're so thankful for the amazing people in the Community ISD Human Resources Department including Chief of HR Dr. Dina Rowe, Director of HR Lee Ann Powell, HR Coordinator DeAnna Robertson, Lead HR Specialist Jennifer Symalla, HR Specialist Kelsey Ramirez, HR Specialist Angie Allen, and HR Administrative Assistant Judie Golightly.

UNITY Day - October 21

Each year the PACER National Bullying Prevention Center designates a day to "Wear and Share Orange." This day is designed to send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to prevent bullying. In Community ISD, we encourage students, staff, and families to keep the C.O.D.E. - Character, Ownership, Drive, and Excellence. These foundational pillars our community is built on allow no room for bullying!

World Occupational Therapy Day - October 27

Community ISD joins in recognizing World Occupational Therapy Day. Held annually on October 27th, the day is an opportunity to heighten the visibility of the profession’s development work and to promote the activities of occupational therapists locally, nationally, and internationally.

National First Responders Day - October 28

On October 28, Community ISD joins in celebrating National First Responders Day, dedicated to the bravery and dedication of our country's heroes.

Dyslexia Awareness Week - October 4-10

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2026 is an important annual campaign that aims to increase understanding and awareness of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling. This week-long event provides an opportunity to highlight the strengths and talents of individuals with dyslexia and to promote inclusive education and workplaces. Dyslexia Awareness Week encourages people to learn more about dyslexia, challenge misconceptions, and support those affected by this learning difference.

National School Lunch Week - October 12-16

This event highlights the importance of a healthy school lunch. This year's theme is "Cafeteria Circus: Where Nutrition Takes Center Stage!" Stay tuned to Community ISD social media for art, costumes, and other celebrations by the CISD Child Nutrition department.

Accounts Payable Week - October 12-16

Celebrating the unsung heroes who keep the financial wheels turning, this annual event is observed in the second week of October. We will honor our accounts payable department for their accuracy, dedication, and vital role in managing cash flow.

National Safe Schools Week - October 18-24

We dedicate the third full week of October each year to educating, empowering, encouraging, and engaging our community to make safety a priority. We will also honor the amazing men and women who keep us safe every day - the CISD Police Department and our CISD Security Office.

National School Bus Safety Week - October 19-23

Organized by the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT), this takes place each year during the third full week of October, and emphasizes the importance of school bus safety, especially when children or staff are entering or exiting a bus. Each year features a poster contest and a theme.

Red Ribbon Week - October 23-31

Observed from October 23 through October 31 annually, Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest and oldest drug-prevention awareness campaign, established to honor DEA Agent Enrique Kiki Camarena. This year's theme is "Make a Difference, Be a Hero, Stay Drug Free." In Community ISD, expect to see daily dress-up/themes and other celebrations.

Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 through October 15

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is held every October. It is a global campaign dedicated to educating the public about the disease, promoting regular screenings, raising funds for research, and supporting survivors and patients.

World Bullying Prevention Month

Founded in 2006, this month is dedicated to preventing childhood bullying and promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. World Bullying Month celebrations include Blue Shirt Day on the first Monday of October and Unity Day/Wear Orange Day on October 21.

Cyber Security Month

With scams, phishing attempts, and other forms of digital attacks costing the global economy over $10 trillion annually, it has never been more important to have resilient digital habits that protect you and others online. Make sure you follow the Core 4 Security Behaviors:

• Use strong passwords and a password manager: Create unique, complex passwords for all your accounts.
• Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of security beyond just a password to log into your apps and accounts.
• Recognize and report scams: Always think before clicking and never provide personal information to unknown or unverified sources. In Community ISD, any time you suspect a scam, send it to phishy@communityisd.org. And remember - no one from Community ISD will EVER ask you for your personal information via email.
• Update your software: Keep your operating systems, apps, and browsers updated to patch vulnerabilities.

National Principals Month

October is dedicated to honoring school leaders for their essential role in shaping student success, supporting teachers, and fostering positive school cultures. The month is a perfect opportunity for students, parents, teachers, and communities to show their appreciation and advocate for the principalship.

• Send Messages of Gratitude: Write a heartfelt letter, have students draw pictures, or record a video message thanking your principal for their hard work.
• Social Media Shoutouts: Publicly honor school administrators by sharing what makes them special using the hashtag #ThankAPrincipal.
• Get Involved in Advocacy: Use your voice to advocate for critical federal funding, better mental health resources, and improved support for the principal pipeline.
• Host Community Events: Organize small gatherings, a school breakfast, or staff-appreciation shoutouts during morning announcements.

National Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

In 1989, the United States Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. DVAM provides an opportunity for everyone to learn about the prevalence and impacts of domestic violence, while coming together to show victims and survivors they are not alone. Fentanyl Awareness Month

October is Fentanyl Awareness Month.
Parents - the amount of fentanyl it takes to overdose is equivalent to a few grains of salt. Father of Texas Day - November 3

Community ISD joins in observing Father of Texas Day in memory of Stephen F. Austin, the great pioneer patriot.

Veterans Day - November 11

Community ISD honors the 𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄 men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Their commitment to protecting our freedom is a legacy we cherish and a sacrifice we will never forget. 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔, 𝐕𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒!

World Kindness Day - observed November 12 - actual date November 13

World Kindness Day is a global observance dedicated to highlighting the importance of positive power and common threads of kindness that bind us together. We will observe this event on November 12 as we are not in school on Fridays. Look for a special video on this day!

Substitute Educators Day - observed November 19 - actual date November 20

Recognizes the vital roles and contributions of substitute employees. Celebrated on Thursday as we do not have school on Fridays.

School Psychology Week - November 2-6

This week celebrates school psychologists' contributions and their important role in schools and communities. It is an annual opportunity to recognize school psychologists' work in helping children thrive in school, at home, and in life.

American Education Week - November 16-20

Celebrated the week prior to Thanksgiving, the event highlights the importance of public education and honors educators, support professionals, and students. Each year's festivities include daily themes designated by the National Education Association (NEA):

• Monday (Nov 16): Kickoff Day — Celebrates excellence in education and introduces the week's events to the community.
• Tuesday (Nov 17): Family Day — Highlights the essential role of parents and families in the educational process.
• Wednesday (Nov 18): Education Support Professionals (ESP) Day — Honors the dedicated school staff who keep students safe, fed, and supported.
• Thursday (Nov 19): Educator for a Day — Invites community leaders and allies into classrooms to experience the school day firsthand.
• Thursday (Nov 19): Substitute Educators Day — Recognizes the vital roles and contributions of substitute employees. Celebrated on Thursday as we do not have school on Fridays.

Generation Texas Week - November 16-20

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is an annual observance in November dedicated to celebrating the cultures, histories, and vital contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives. Established in 1990, it serves to educate the public about Indigenous peoples, their sovereignty, and their ongoing influence on American society.

Special Education Day - December 2

National Special Education Day is celebrated annually on December 2 to commemorate the 1975 signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the landmark federal law that ensures all children have access to free and quality public education tailored to their unique needs.

Computer Science Education Week - December 7-11

Computer Science Education Week is an annual call to action to inspire K-12 students to learn computer science and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field. We encourage students to participate in The Hour of Code / Hour of AI. It offers simple, one-hour tutorials designed to demystify programming and introduce students to artificial intelligence and coding fundamentals. Find more information here.

Sam Rayburn Day - January 6

Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn, one of the most influential political leaders in U.S. history, is honored each year on January 6, his birthday. Rayburn represented the State of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives for nearly five decades, including a record 17 years as Speaker of the House. Known as "Mr. Sam", he earned respect from both sides of the political aisle for his fairness and humility. Sam Rayburn lived out the Community C.O.D.E. in everything he did!

National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day - observed January 7 - actual date January 9

This event is commemorated annually on January 9, but as that date is a Saturday, CISD campuses will honor our amazing CISD Police Department and our partners in law enforcement at the cities of Josephine and Lavon, as well as the Collin County and Hunt County Sheriff's Offices, on Thursday, January 7.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - January 18

This federal holiday always falls on the third Monday in January, honoring the civil rights leader's life and legacy. Community ISD asks that you spend MLK Day in service to your fellow Code Keepers, finding ways to connect with and care for others.

Texas Holocaust Remembrance Week - January 25-29

Texas Holocaust Remembrance Week is observed annually in late January to coincide with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is January 27. Established in 2019 under Senate Bill 1828, the state mandates that all public schools (K-12) provide age-appropriate instruction and learning projects during this time.

School Board Recognition Month

January is Texas Association of School Boards #SchoolBoardRecognitionMonth! We are so thankful for these seven individuals who have dedicated their lives to our Braves, and work so hard on a volunteer basis to make sure Community ISD is the best it can be.

Each year, the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) announces a theme to help guide recognition efforts and thoughtful conversations. We'll be asking each board member to share with us what that theme means to them, as well as a little biographical information about themselves, in video.

Texas Military Heroes Day - February 2

Gov. Greg Abbott declared Feb. 2 "Texas Military Heroes Day" in honor of all Texans who have and continue to defend the United States of America.

National Wear RED Day - observed February 4 - actual February 5

National Wear Red Day is observed on the first Friday of February each year, raising awareness of cardiovascular disease, the #1 cause of death of women. By wearing red, individuals and communities unite to promote heart-healthy lifestyles.

Valentines Day - observed February 11 - actual February 14

We love our Code Keepers! On a campus-by-campus basis, students will participate in any Valentines Day-themed parties on Thursday, February 11, as we are not in school on Sunday, February 14.

School Resource Officer Day - February 15

Though Community ISD's Police Officers are not "SROs", we honor them and our Security Officers on February 15 each year. Thank you for keeping us safe!

Presidents' Day - February 15

Observed on the third Monday of February each year, Presidents' Day commemorates all the past and present commanders-in-chief of the United States of America.

Random Acts of Kindness Day - February 17

Celebrated internationally since 1995, Community ISD will observe Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17. Take a moment to go out of your way and surprise a student, staff member, or family member with a random act of kindness!

State of Texas Anniversary Remembrance (STAR) Day - observed February 18 - actual February 19

On February 19, 1846, Texas officially joined the United States and James Pinckney Henderson took office as the state's first governor. Texas Government Code requires public schools to hold patriotic programs that inspire a greater appreciation for Texas history.

School Counseling Week - February 1-5

National School Counseling Week highlights the unique contributions of school counselors within U.S. school systems and their tremendous impact on student success. Please take time to thank our amazing school counselors in Community ISD!

National FFA Week - February 21-27

This nationwide annual event celebrates agricultural education and leadership, traditionally scheduled to encompass George Washington's birthday. Theme days include:

• SAE Sunday: Showcasing hands-on Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs).
• Service & Advocacy Day: Chapters participate in local community service projects.
• Alumni Day: Honoring the mentors, supporters, and former members.
• Ag Teacher Appreciation Day: Recognizing agriculture educators.
• Give FFA Day: A 24-hour campaign raising funds to support local chapters and the National FFA Foundation.
• National Wear Blue Day: Members and supporters are encouraged to wear the iconic blue and show their FFA pride

Black History Month

On our first instructional day in February, Community ISD proudly begins its celebration of Black History Month. Each campus will host programs, with meaningful lessons and activities taking place throughout the month.

National Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

February is National Teen Dating Violence Prevention Month.

This annual month-long effort focuses on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. Everyone has the right to a safe and healthy relationship.

Texas Girls in STEM Day - March 1

Texas Girls in STEM Day is celebrated annually on March 1st to encourage girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The day also honors women who have excelled in these fields.

Texas Independence Day - March 2

The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on this day in 1836, establishing the Republic of Texas.

National Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day - March 4

National School Breakfast Week - March 1-5

Did you know that students who eat a nutritious breakfast are more likely to attend school, be focused in class, and perform better academically? National School Breakfast Week highlights the importance of the National School Breakfast Program with dress-up days, decor, and facts about breakfast.

Educational Diagnostician Week - March 1-5

Texas Public Schools Week - March 1-5

Community ISD invites students, staff, and families to join us in celebrating the people and partnerships that support this great experiment we call public education during the week of March 1-5! Texas Public Schools Week is a time for all of CISD to recognize the educators, support staff, volunteers, administrators, and community partners who help students grow, learn, and prepare for the future. National Foreign Language Week - March 7-13

The first full week of March is celebrated as National Foreign Language Week annually. Community ISD utilizes the week to highlight the cognitive and career benefits of being bilingual, and to celebrate the Multilingual Department's service and contributions to CISD.

National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week - March 15-21

NDAFW is a week-long health observance highlighting the science-based facts about how drugs and alcohol affect the brain and body. Resources for this annual event are available here.

Women's History Month

Every year, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. All month, Community ISD students will continue to learn about women’s contributions in American history.

Texas History Month

March is Texas History Month, a time to fly the Texas flag and celebrate our state's unique history! Recognizing the importance of Texas history, the 78th Legislature enacted legislation on June 20, 2003, declaring March 1-31 of every year as Texas History Month. Please join us in celebrating our great state on its Independence Day (March 2, 1836), and all throughout the month of March!

National Athletic Trainers Month

National Athletic Training Month (NATM) is held every March to raise awareness of athletic trainers, licensed health care professionals who prevent, diagnose, and treat injuries and medical conditions. Join us in thanking the wonderful athletic trainers we have in Community ISD!

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day - April 7

Paraprofessional Appreciation Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday of April each year. The day has a history dating back to the 1960s, when paraprofessionals were hired to support schools across the United States as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society program.

School Librarian Appreciation Day - observed April 5 - actual April 4

National School Librarian Day is a day to recognize the work of school librarians who keep libraries organized and help students find resources. We love our librarians so much! Thank you for all you do for Brave Nation students and staff!

Administrative Professionals Day - April 21

School Bus Driver Appreciation Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday in April, and is intended to draw special attention to school bus drivers for their enduring and exceptional contributions to students. You make school possible, and are the first and last face most students see every day!

Public Schools Volunteer Week - April 19-23

First established over 50 years ago by President Nixon, National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually in the last week of April. In his original proclamation establishing the week, President Nixon urged "all Americans to observe [the] week by seeking out an area in their community in which they can give to a needy individual or worthy cause by devoting a few hours, or more, each week to volunteer service." National Student Leadership Week - April 19-23

Celebrating the next generation of leaders each year, this week is a recognition of student governance and leadership that aims to encourage the development of student leaders across the country. Last school year, McClendon Elementary's Pamela Simmons and her Student Council were recognized by the National Association of Elementary Principals and the American Student Council Association as a School of Excellence!

National Autism Awareness Month

April is designated as National Autism Acceptance/Awareness Month to increase understanding, foster inclusion, and celebrate the strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum, with 1 in 36 children identified with ASD. If you would like to share your story/celebration with us, please do not hesitate to send an email to info@communityisd.org!

National Volunteer Month

There are countless people that work hard to make #BraveNation great, and we'd like to spend an entire month highlighting a special group that so often does the thankless work behind the scenes - our volunteers!

Held in April every year, National Volunteer Month is a time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of volunteers. It is an opportunity to join the impact of volunteerism and encourage more people to get involved in their communities. This is a great month to reaffirm your commitment to giving back!

Did you know there are plenty of ways that YOU can get involved as a volunteer at your child's campus today? As a secondary focus of our volunteer celebration this month, we also want to convince more parents to join the ranks of Community ISD volunteers and help out the folks that have given so much to take care of our students!

School Principals' Day - observed May 3 - actual May 1

Normally observed on May 1 each year, we'll move our spring celebration of our campus leaders to Monday, May 3 since we're not in school on May 1!

National Principals’ Day is celebrated May 1 each year, acknowledging the valuable work performed by campus administrators, the long hours they serve each week, and their dedication to their students and staff. Principals work tirelessly behind the scenes, often going above and beyond their call of duty to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive school culture that encourages learning and personal growth. The celebration of National Principals' Day not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication of principals, but also raises awareness about the importance of strong leadership in schools. Cinco De Mayo - May 5

This date commemorates Mexico's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 - not Mexican Independence Day, a common misconception. Celebrate Mexican culture with us on Wednesday, May 5!

School Lunch Hero Day - observed May 6 - actual May 7

Observed nationally on the first Friday in May, Community ISD will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on Thursday, May 6. Please make sure to say thank you to our fabulous child nutrition staff. These awesome people work so hard to feed our students - body and soul - every day.

School Communicators Day - observed May 6 - actual May 8

School Communicators Day is celebrated annually on May 8 to recognize the vital contributions of school public relations and communications professionals. Established by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), the day honors the behind-the-scenes staff who manage district news, share student and staff achievements, and keep families connected.

Texas Public School Paraprofessional Appreciation Day - May 12

The State of Texas has designated the second Wednesday of May each year as Public School Paraprofessional Day to recognize the contributions of classroom assistants, aides, and tutors.

School Nurse Day - May 12

Since 1972, the second Wednesday of May has been set aside to recognize school nurses. National School Nurse Day was established to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting. Thank you so much to our amazing school nurses, as well as our Director of Health Services, for all they do to keep our students and staff safe and healthy! You make school possible.

Speech Language Pathologist Day - May 18

National Speech-Language Pathologist Day (SLP Day) is observed each year on May 18. This day recognizes and celebrates the contributions of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in helping individuals overcome communication and swallowing difficulties. SLPs are professionals who specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of speech, language, and swallowing disorders.

National Physical Education & Sport Week - May 1-7

National PE and Sport Week is celebrated annually from May 1-7. Established to highlight the vital role physical education plays in promoting lifelong fitness, mental well-being, and healthy habits.

Teacher Appreciation Week - May 3-7

Teacher Appreciation Week is a period of celebration where teachers across the United States are thanked for their hard work, dedication, and commitment. Organized by the National Education Association (NEA), Teacher Appreciation Week is a time to give back to your extraordinary educators and show appreciation. As the world adapts to the recent pandemic and the ever-changing face of education, teachers continue to shape the next generation by delivering incredible learning opportunities, even in the face of many challenges. For that, administrators, parents, and children take one extra special week to say thank you and uplift and celebrate the contributions of educators across America.

National Police Week - May 9-15

An annual observance that always includes May 15, this week was set aside in 1962 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress. May 15 is designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, when the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff on all government buildings in honor of the fallen peace officers of our nation. This week features various memorial services, survivor gatherings, and community appreciation events.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Community ISD joins in celebrating Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month during May. This month-long celebration recognizes and honors the contributions, histories, and traditions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the state and the nation.

Mental Health Awareness Month

Since its inception in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month has been a cornerstone of addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. Throughout the month, Community ISD will provide mental health resources while cultivating empathy and understanding. 

Juneteenth - June 19

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is the name given to Emancipation Day by African Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865, Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston. It stated:

"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."
