Dr. Roosevelt Nivens was appointed to serve as the 11th Superintendent of Community ISD on July 28, 2015. Born and raised in Langston, Oklahoma, Dr. Nivens is the son of two lifetime educators who combined to serve almost 90 years in public schools. As an inspirational leader, he believes his work is more than a profession, it is his calling.
In 1990, Roosevelt majored in Education while attending Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Virginia, on a football scholarship. He later graduated from college in 1995 and realized his life-long dream of playing professional football. However, his football career was quickly halted due to an injury and he found himself executing his “back-up plan”, using his degree in education. In 1996, he began his teaching and coaching career with Dallas Independent School District and later, in 2001, he found his way to campus leadership positions with Lancaster Independent School District. He has served as Assistant Principal at Lancaster Jr. High and Lancaster High School. In 2005, Nivens became the Principal at Lancaster Middle School. His last campus position was Principal of Lancaster High School where he served from 2007 - 2011, leading a school turnaround that resulted in LHS becoming the 2nd most improved high school in North Texas. In 2011, Dr. Nivens accepted a central office leadership position with Lancaster ISD as the Executive Director of Secondary Schools. During the four years prior to coming to Community ISD, Dr. Nivens served as the Assistant Superintendent of Achievement and Organizational Management for Lancaster ISD.
Dr. Nivens earned his Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) from Texas A&M Commerce in 2015. He has also trained at the Harvard Executive Leadership Institute, the Harrison Williams Collins Executive Leadership Institute, and the Thompson Executive Leadership Institute.
Dr. Nivens and his wife Karla have two children, Naomi (CHS Class of 2020) and Roosevelt III (CHS Class of 2022).
