Calendar Development Process

  • The 2019-20 CISD calendar was developed with primary consideration for our current instructional needs while seeking to maintain the traditional holiday breaks valued by our students, families and staff. The calendar development process includes reviewing other district's adopted or proposed calendars; reviewing feedback received throughout the year and in previous surveys; and seeking input from campus and central administrators, students, teachers, staff and parents. The proposed calendar and feedback survey were posted to the CISD website and shared with all parents via Blackboard email (English and Spanish), sent to secondary students via Blackboard email, to all staff via CISD email, and posted to social media. Parents, staff, students and community members were able to provide feedback until February 1, 2019. There were 168 comment responses to the survey: 72% approved of the calendar; 16% of the responses indicated they would prefer a later start date in August and/or did not like starting school on a Thursday; and 13% requested that the school year end before Memorial Day. Other comments mentioned in less than 4% of responses included: matching our calendar to another district, scheduling an earlier or later spring break, picking a different date for fall break and/or data days, and observing a specific holiday like Veterans' Day or Presidents' Day.

The CISD Board of Trustees approved the 2019-20 school calendar on Monday, February 18, 2019.

    2019-20 Calendar

    2019-20 CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS:

    • First day of school: Thursday, August 15, 2019
      • Campus administrators requested a mid-week start so that students and teachers can spend a couple of days adjusting to schedules and learning campus/classroom expectations before beginning the first full week of instruction
      • Because Community ISD is a District of Innovation we have the flexibility to start school prior to the fourth Monday in August as was previously required by the Texas Education Code. An earlier start date allows the proposed 2019-20 calendar to maintain the traditional holiday breaks as well as the October fall break which was implemented in 2017.
      • Surrounding school districts with start dates before the fourth Monday in August:
        • Garland ISD - Monday, August 12
        • Coppell ISD - Wednesday, August 14
        • Forney ISD - Monday, August 19
        • Rockwall ISD - Monday, August 19
        • Wylie ISD - Thursday, August 15
        • IMPORTANT NOTE: the start date for 2020-21 is expected to be later in August due to the opening of the new Community High School campus.

    • Last day of school: Wednesday, May 27, 2020
      • Although we know many would like for the school year to end before Memorial day, the testing calendar set by the Texas Education Agency extends through May 22, 2019. Ending school prior to Memorial Day could conflict with online STAAR testing. Additionally, CHS graduation can’t be scheduled earlier that STAAR tests results are available from the state.

    • Spring Break: March 9-13, 2020
      • Previous survey feedback has indicated that the preferred week for spring break is the 2nd full week of March. Additionally, survey respondents have consistently requested that CISD match their spring break with colleges and surrounding districts if possible.
      • The 2020 spring break will be the 2nd full week in March which also aligns with surrounding districts of Wylie ISD, Rockwall ISD, Frisco ISD, McKinney ISD, Garland ISD and Forney ISD.

    • Bad Weather Makeup Day: Monday, April 13, 2020
      • This day will not be needed to make-up for lost instruction time unless the District closes for more than four days during 2019-20 due to inclement weather.

    • Professional Development and Data Days
      • The 2019-20 calendar fulfills the required teacher contract days and includes a total of 13 professional development days (8 days of training before the start of school, 1 day of professional development training on October 15, and three data days) as well as two evenings for parent conferences.

    • Instructional Days
      • The 2019-20 calendar includes 172 instructional days for students, which is a total of 77,400 minutes.
