CISD Strategic Planning

Community ISD is engaging in a strategic planning process designed to create goals and objectives which will be incorporated into a five-year plan for the District. The Strategic Plan will help ensure that all of our energies and resources are being dedicated to the right areas to guide the District to success.

The mobile-friendly survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is designed to gather feedback from all members of the CISD community, including homeowners, community partners, students, staff and parents.

Results of this survey will be shared with a planning team, which will provide recommendations to the board of trustees. Your input is very valuable and we appreciate you taking time to complete the survey:

Changes to Calendar and Earlier Start Time for 2016-2017

We want to make you aware of a new state requirement affecting school districts across the State of Texas. The Texas Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 2610 amending the Texas Education Code to require districts to provide “at least 75,600 minutes of instruction” instead of “180 days of instruction”.

Districts now have the flexibility to add minutes to the instructional day to compensate for time lost due to school closures, such as inclement weather. This flexibility can also be used to meet district needs related to dealing with academic intervention time, professional development and the scheduling of student and teacher holidays or breaks.

In order to maintain this flexibility in our 2016-2017 calendar and meet the required minutes of instruction, CISD will make the following adjustments to the start and end times for our campuses next year:

  Start End
Elementary 7:30 AM 3:00 PM
Middle 8:15 AM 3:45 PM
High 8:20 AM 3:50 PM

With the adjusted school start and end times, the proposed 2016-17 calendar includes 78,300 minutes, which is 2,700 minutes MORE than the minimum required. This increased time for teaching and learning will be valuable as we are committed to providing rigorous, engaging, and relevant experiences for all of our students.

Additionally, the extra minutes in the school day mean we will not need to use either of the bad weather make-up days on the proposed calendar (February 29, 2017 and April 14, 2017) unless inclement weather causes us to miss more than six school days.

The proposed start times and 2016-17 calendar will be presented to the CISD Board for approval on February 15, 2016. If you have questions or concerns to be considered before this date, please email: info@communityisd.org.
